Course Descriptions


FRESHMAN ACADEMY - As part of the small learning community structure of the freshman year, the Music Department offers Band, Chorus and Orchestra. Please see the course descriptions below.

MUSIC KEYBOARDING 1 - 1/2 year, 1/2 credit - Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class is for students with little or no piano experience and will teach students the basics of piano keyboarding performance using the MIDI Keyboards in the Glenbard East Music Technology Lab. Using their keyboard skills, students will also explore elements of music theory, history, notation and composition. Stu- dents taking this class will become familiar with the wide range of music technology that is avail- able to musicians today. The class is geared to students with little or no experience with a piano keyboard. Successful completion of this class will also prepare students for Music Keyboarding 2. This course will apply to the cultural arts requirement for graduation. Students are charged a fee of $10 per semester.

MUSIC KEYBOARDING 2 - 1/2 year, 1/2 credit - Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class is a continuation of Music Keyboarding 1, stressing the development of advanced keyboard skills. Students enrolled in Keyboarding 2 will build on their foundation of keyboard skills as they develop such skills as jazz playing and improvisation as well as working on their own compositions and arrangements using the keyboards and support technology available in the lab. This class will allow students to develop their skills both within a group as well as through independent projects that are co- ordinated on a ìone-to-oneî type basis with the instructor. This class will be geared to students with keyboarding background; either private piano lessons, or successful completion of Music Keyboarding 1. This course will apply to the cultural arts requirement for graduation. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Music Keyboarding 1 or approval of instructor.

MUSIC THEORY AP - 1 year, 1 credit, Soph., Jr., Sr. - This course provides the advanced music student with a thorough introduction to the fundamentals of music. Notation, terminology, rhythm, scales and tonality, basic harmony, and ear training are studied to develop a solid foundation for the continued serious study of music. Music composition, music history, and music technology are also integral components of the class. Students must have successfully completed Music Theory AP the first semester in order to take the second semester of this class. Students need to be able to read music notation. Prerequisite: Applied Music Study or approval of the instructor.

BEGINNING WINDS - Open to all students - 1 year, 1 credit - This class will provide an oppor- tunity to learn to play a musical instrument at the beginning level. Students who have prior ex- perience on an instrument may choose this class to provide continued instruction on their instru- ment, switch to a different instrument, or have the opportunity to learn a secondary instrument. The student is responsible for supplying an instrument, minor equipment, and purchasing method books. Some instruments may be available for student use.

CONCERT BAND 1 - Open to all students - 1 year, 1 credit - At this level students continue to develop technical proficiency on their individual instruments and, at the same time, work on the techniques of ensemble and full band performance. Instrumental techniques should im- prove with the study of range, auxiliary fingerings, articulation and phrasing. This organization studies and performs grade III and IV literature.  This class also includes membership in the Marching Band and Pep Band. Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.

CONCERT BAND 2 - Open to all students - 1 year, 1 credit - The fundamentals of technique and musicianship are studied in this band. These fundamentals include care of the instrument, posture and playing position, embouchure, breath control, tone production, intonation and fingerings. The techniques of ensemble and full band performance are stressed. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer programs. Prerequisite: Previous instruction on the chosen instrument at the junior high level or success- ful completion of Beginning Winds.

SYMPHONIC BAND - 1 year, 1 credit, Fr., Soph., Jr., Sr. - This band is composed of students who are very musically proficient. Every effort is made to maintain a well-balanced instrumentation. Continued emphasis is given to the development of musicianship through progressive technical studies and more difficult compositions. The repertoire of this organiza- tion is primarily composed of grade IV and V music.     This class also includes membership in the Marching Band and Pep Band.  Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.

BEGINNING ORCHESTRA - Open to all students - 1 year, 1 credit - This class will provide an opportunity to learn to play a musical stringed instrument at the beginning level (violin, viola, cello, string bass.)       Students who have prior experience on an instrument may choose this class to provide continued instruction on their instrument, or to have the opportunity to learn
a secondary stringed instrument. The student will be responsible for supplying an instrument and purchasing a method book. School cellos and string basses are available for student use.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA - 1 year, 1 credit, Fr., Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class is for students who have played a stringed instrument previously, and who are continuing to develop technical and musical proficiency on their instrument. Emphasis is placed on bowing, vibrato, intona- tion, and rhythm, as well as techniques of ensemble playing and full orchestra performance. Several styles of music are prepared, and some performances are done in combination with the Concert Orchestra. Prerequisite: Previous instruction on chosen instrument or suc- cessful completion of Orchestra 1.

CONCERT ORCHESTRA - 1 year, 1 credit, Soph., Jr., Sr. - The students in this organization are advanced players who have a serious interest in playing orchestral music. Continued em- phasis is given to the development of musicianship through progressive technical studies and grade IV and V literature. String and symphonic music is performed. Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.

TREBLE CHORUS - 1 year, 1 credit, Fr., Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class is open to all students who are interested in learning to sing or who wish to improve their singing skills. No experi- ence is necessary. The fundamentals of breath control, posture, tone production, intonation, diction, reading notes, sight singing and general musicianship are stressed. Opportunities are available during the school year for public performance. Special attention is given to the changing voice. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer programs.

BARITONE CHORUS - 1 year, 1 credit, Fr., Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class is open to all stu- dents who are interested in learning to sing or who wish to improve their singing skills. No ex- perience is necessary. The fundamentals of breath control, posture, tone production, intona- tion, diction, reading notes, sight singing and general musicianship are stressed. Opportunities are available during the school year for public performance. Special attention is given to the changing voice. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer programs.

ADVANCED CHORUS - 1 year, 1 credit, Soph., Jr., Sr. - This class stresses the fundamen- tals of sight reading, tone production, breath control, balance, blend, diction, sight singing, and intonation. Opportunities are offered for ensemble work and public performance. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer pro- grams. Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.

CONCERT CHORALE - 1 year, 1 credit, Soph., Jr., Sr. - Membership into this Womenís Ensemble is determined by maturity of the studentís tone and musical competency. Opportu- nities are offered for ensemble work, and the study of choral literature of the highest caliber. Several concerts a year are given before school, civic and other groups. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer programs. Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.

CONCERT CHOIR - 1 year, 1 credit, Soph., Jr., Sr. - Membership into this mixed ensemble is determined by maturity of the studentís tone, musical competency and the balancing of voice parts. Opportunities are offered for ensemble work, Madrigal Singers, Eastwind Vocal Ensem- ble, and the study of choral literature of the highest caliber. Several concerts a year are given before school, civic and other groups. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their musical skills through the use of computer programs. Prerequisite: Audition and selection by Director.
