PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME
Welcome to the 2009-10 school year at Glenbard East. This is a special year because it marks the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Glenbard East. Whether you are a student, a parent, or an alumni, the 2009–2010 school year promises to be exciting, eventful, and rewarding. Both new and old faces will grace our hallways this year. Incoming freshmen and new staff will enter our campus and carry on the proud tradition that has been part of East for fifty years.
I welcome all students and visitors to our school with high expectations and a commitment to prepare every student for the demands of an ever-changing world. The cornerstone of this preparation is a rigorous and demanding educational program for all students. Other building blocks include commitment to personal responsibility, respect for all members of the Glenbard East family, and the pursuit of excellence in all areas of a comprehensive high school.
As Principal, I have the great fortune to undertake this task with a committed and talented staff who value working with parents to realize the promise that our students hold. At East, adjectives like “hard working,” “innovative,” and “compassionate” are used to describe the faculty and staff.
For the second year in a row, Glenbard East has been included in Newsweek’s list of the top High Schools in America. This honor is a reflection of the academic rigor available to all students at East. Our new students this year will be filling the shoes of departing Seniors who left our school for some of the most demanding and prestigious universities in the country. I expect nothing less for our Senior class of 2010.
Our slogan is Growing Beyond Expectations, and we will do that. We will do it by adhering to the motto which was coined by Mr. William Rider, Glenbard East’s first principal, Right Attitude Means Success. Attitude about school starts with attendance. It is the expectation of administration and staff that every student will be punctual and present each class period of each day. Research and common sense indicate that regular daily attendance by students is important for success. While some students may be able to pass tests and achieve good grades despite absences, one visit to any classroom in our school will verify the number and range of activities in progress. The student who is absent misses these activities
and no amount of make-up work can replicate them. Students with irregular attendance patterns, whether excused or unexcused, may find it difficult to be successful in specific classes and may be subject to a loss of graduation credits. As a result, it is extremely important that parents and/or guardians emphasize the need for students to be punctual and in attendance each day. Please work with us to minimize the amount of time that your son or daughter misses school.
I look forward to meeting you and working together to make this the best year ever at Glenbard East.
Mr. Josh Chambers, Principal
Glenbard East High School
